MILLERSBURG — It took only about an hour in court Wednesday morning for justice to be meted out for more than half of the 73 young people arrested Saturday night at a massive Amish party. A total of 38 adults, ranging in age from 18-20, were charged with underage consumption of alcohol in Holmes County Municipal Court, where all appeared Wednesday. Underage consumption is a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. All entered pleas of not guilty or no contest and each was sentenced by visiting Judge Michael Nunner to a $250 fine, court costs and 10 days in jail, suspended pending they have no further violations of law before turning 21 years old. It was a sentence recommended by the Holmes County Prosecutor s Office and is consistent with sentences handed down in similar cases, said Prosecutor Steve Knowling, noting, â€Å"Whether they re Amish, English, or Chinese, we re going to have the same approach for everybody.† He said his office has yet to review charges against 35 juveniles also arrested at the party and any information that would substantiate charging the owner of the property on which the party was held.
